Thread is M18 x 1.5, the size fitted to BMW N62, N63, S63 and N73 engines, to Volvo five-cylinder and older engines, and to Cummins 5.9L and 6.7L diesels. Compare the plug that comes out against these numbers before ordering.
- - A neodymium rare-earth magnet is machined into the tip and attracts ferrous shavings circulating with the oil, including fragments under 30 microns that pass through filter media. The material comes from normal wear at bearings, camshafts, timing chains and piston rings. Whatever the magnet holds is visible at every oil change, so the plug doubles as a simple read on internal engine condition between services.
- - Machined from aluminum alloy and anodized for surface hardness and a clean look under the car. Aluminum matches the material of a cast oil pan, so plug and pan move together through heat cycles and the galvanic reaction between dissimilar metals is ruled out. Copper crushes under torque, fills the fine surface texture between the bolt head and the pan and forms a tight seal, and a fresh washer at every service is what keeps the pan dry afterwards. Seat the washer, start the plug by hand and torque to the figure in your service manual, then wipe the magnet and reuse the plug at the next change.
